At a unique Chiang Mai university for Buddhist monks, students study Buddhism in the morning and attend English-language classes in the afternoon. The diverse student body includes Thais and other Asians. Volunteers assist English professors with lessons, practice, and sometimes planning and grading. The university is located in a historic temple and has an academic atmosphere, with closures on Sundays, Thai holidays, and Buddhist holy days.

International University for Monks

Embrace a Unique Educational Experience

Located in the heart of Chiang Mai, this project offers a truly unique experience. The university hosts around 250 students from various Asian countries, including Thailand, India, Bangladesh, Cambodia, and Laos. This cultural diversity creates a rich, international learning environment focused on the higher education of Buddhist monks.

A Historic and Academic Setting

Nestled within one of Chiang Mai’s largest and most historic temples, the university is surrounded by other academic institutions, enhancing its scholarly atmosphere. As a volunteer, you'll collaborate with the English department, supported by an experienced team of Thai professors and Buddhist monk faculty members.

Make a Meaningful Impact

As a volunteer, you'll assist in teaching English, helping students improve their pronunciation, writing, and conversation skills. For those with a background in education, there are opportunities to engage in lesson planning and exam preparation. Your role will be tailored to your skills and experience, ensuring a fulfilling and impactful experience.

Daily Engagements

  • Work alongside dedicated professors for three to four class hours each afternoon.
  • Build relationships with students through informal language practice.
  • Contribute to classroom preparation and grading as needed.

The university observes a Buddhist day each week, providing a unique cultural experience. When this day falls on a weekday, classes are made up on Saturdays. The university is also closed on Sundays, Thai holidays, and Buddhist holy days.

  • Minimum age: 18 years.
  • Fluent English speaker.

  • Experience in university-level instruction is a plus, offering more opportunities for responsibility.
