Interning at a Magazine in Thailand – A day in the life

Chiang Mai, with its relaxed and international vibe, stands out as a prime destination for expatriates in Southeast Asia. The city, home to a vibrant community of foreign professionals, teachers, and NGO workers, fosters a high demand for English-language news and entertainment. For aspiring professionals, this presents exciting internship opportunities.

Through a unique partnership with Friends For Asia, Volunteer Thailand offers qualified candidates the chance to intern with Northern Thailand's leading English-language entertainment magazine. Published monthly, this magazine covers everything from local event announcements to in-depth features relevant to Southeast Asia. Additionally, the magazine's web-based platform requires diverse skill sets beyond traditional writing roles.

Available Internship Opportunities:

  • Editorial Writing
  • Print and Design
  • Photography
  • Web Design
  • Multimedia Design

The magazine’s office boasts a dynamic team of both Western and Thai employees, all fluent in English. The standard workweek runs from Monday to Friday, 9:00 am to 4:00 pm. Depending on the duration of your internship, you might also be involved in weekend work or assisting with the magazine’s monthly events.

Magazine Intern Tasks

Due to the deadline-driven nature of the magazine, only highly motivated, fluent English speakers will be considered. Interns should possess a solid understanding of their chosen area. Each position is filled by one intern at a time, though there may be opportunities for cross-functional work based on availability and the intern’s background.

Building Experience in Chiang Mai

Breaking into the publishing industry can be challenging, and relevant experience is often required. Chiang Mai's welcoming atmosphere makes it an ideal location for a four-week (or longer) stay, allowing interns to immerse themselves in the local culture while gaining valuable industry experience. The magazine's managing editor is known for their openness to new talent, providing ambitious interns with the chance to lead their own projects and produce high-quality, engaging material.

For those passionate about writing, photography, or design, this internship in Chiang Mai offers not only hands-on experience but also the potential to have your work published. If you're eager to gain industry experience in a culturally rich environment, Volunteer Thailand’s magazine internship could be the perfect opportunity for you.
