Orphanage Volunteer – Bangkok

Overview

The Orphanage Volunteer Project in Bangkok provides a unique opportunity to make a direct and meaningful impact on the lives of young children awaiting adoption. Volunteers work closely with a small group of children who have been given up for adoption, contributing to their development and preparation for a future with their adoptive families, primarily in the West.

Background

This project is operated by a non-profit foundation that has been active since the 1970s. Managed independently by a Thai executive committee, the orphanage has no sectarian affiliations and focuses on providing personalized care to a small group of children — fewer than ten at any given time. This intimate setting allows both full-time staff and volunteers to dedicate more attention to each child's individual needs.

Volunteer Tasks

  • Primary Care and Meal Preparation: Assisting full-time staff in preparing meals and providing daily care.
  • Cleaning and Housekeeping: Helping to maintain a clean and safe environment for the children.
  • Planning Activities: Organizing and leading games, arts and crafts, and other activities that promote social and emotional development.
  • Direct Interaction: Spending time with the children, including reading stories, playing, and providing emotional support.

The varied nature of the tasks ensures that volunteers are always engaged and contributing meaningfully, addressing needs that may arise on a day-to-day basis.

Making a Difference

Volunteering at the Bangkok orphanage is particularly impactful because all non-disabled children at the site are expected to be adopted by Western families. As a volunteer, you provide critical exposure to Western languages and customs, helping the children prepare for their transition into a new culture. Your efforts help build a foundation for better adjustment and smoother integration into their future homes.

Qualifications

  • Must be at least 18 years old.
  • Fluent in written and spoken English.
  • Compassionate, flexible, and patient, especially when working with disabled children.
  • A certified police background check is required before starting the project.

Benefits

  • A unique chance to support children in a crucial transitional phase of their lives.
  • Opportunities to immerse yourself in the Thai culture and language.
  • Flexible work hours, allowing for exploration of Bangkok during evenings and weekends.

This project is ideal for volunteers who are passionate about child welfare and are ready to make a significant difference in the lives of vulnerable children.

Bangkok has been a very new experience for me. A busy, hectic, and hot city, it blasted me out of my comfort zone – and I am truly grateful for it. I feel that my experience being immersed in Thai culture has been both an engaging and enlightening one – being able to experience a brand-new culture in such a hands-on way has taught me the importance of keeping an open mind, staying humble, and the importance of seizing new opportunities. I feel that this trip has really allowed me to grow as an individual.
