Chiang Mai Volunteer Group #230

Chiang Mai Volunteer Group #230

Presenting Chiang Mai Volunteer and Intern Group #230! Early November signals the re-opening of the schools after the Thailand mid-school year break. It's really a lovely time of year, as the rains have stopped, and cooler, more comfortable weather is upon us. This group of 17 new volunteers and interns arrived a week and a half ago. Their arrival day (Friday, the 3rd of November) was also the main day of celebration for the Loy Krathong festival. They got to make krathongs with our coordinating staff, and observe the customs of this lovely, cultural celebration of life.
Loy Krathong 2017

Loy Krathong 2017

Loy Krathong is considered to be one of oldest and best-preserved traditions in Thailand. It is the time of the year when Thai people pay respect to the goddess of the river, Phra Mae Khongkha, for providing water to support their lives throughout the year. Loy Krathong takes place on the evening of the full moon of the 12th month in the traditional Thai Lunar calendar; therefore, the exact date of the festival changes every year. This year, Loy Krathong will be celebrated on Friday 3rd November. Since Loy Krathong has long been celebrated by Thai people, it is one of the Thai cultures that our volunteers should experience if they get a chance. There will be celebrations all around the country and we would like to share our handpicked four Loy Krathong events that are worth participating in.
